The Cheras and the Development of Malayalam

The Chera kingdom of Mahodayapuram was established in the south-western part of the Peninsula, part of present-day Kerala. Malayalam was spoken in this area. The rulers introduced the Malayalam language and script in their inscriptions. The Cheras also drew upon Sanskritic traditions. The temple theatre of Kerala, which is traced to this period, borrowed stories from the Sanskrit epics.

The first literary works in Malayalam ,dated to about the tewlfth century , are directly indebted to sanskrit.Interestingly enough ,a fourteenth -century text , the Lilatilakam , dealing with grammer and poetics was composed in Manipravalam -literally.

The role of Cheras in the development of Malayalam are as follows:

  • In the 9th century, south western part of great Indian peninsula witnessed the strong empire of Chera of Mahodayapuram which is now known as Kerela.
  • From the sourves it is witnessed that now a days Malayalam language was acknowledged by Chera rulers according to their inscriptions and due to this fact it is also spoken now a days.
  • Moreover the most ancient sources have been recovered of the Malayalam language from official records of south western part of India.
